TGEM, in partnership with GE and Cobra, completes a key stage of the Kayrakkum HPP modernization
TGEM announces the completion of an important phase of the comprehensive modernization program of the Kayrakkum Hydropower Plant, implemented in close technological cooperation with international engineering companies GE and Cobra.
On November 20, in the city of Guliston, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, inaugurated three fully modernized hydropower units. The upgrade forms part of a broader initiative to reconstruct all six generating units of the station, resulting in a 60 MW increase in installed capacity.
Each of the units, originally commissioned in the 1950s, has undergone complete technical refurbishment. Their individual capacity has been raised from 12 MW to 29 MW. TGEM engineers, working jointly with GE and Cobra specialists, installed modern turbine control systems, new transformers, advanced automation, machine hall equipment, and 220/110 kV gas-insulated switchgear.
The modernization also includes reinforcement of the dam structure, upgrading of five overhead cranes, and ongoing civil works such as building rehabilitation, shoreline reinforcement, and site improvement, planned to continue through 2026.
Once the full program is completed, the plant’s annual electricity generation will increase from 650 million to 900 million kWh, significantly strengthening regional energy reliability.
TGEM will continue its contribution to the remaining project phases, prioritizing engineering precision, disciplined execution, and a level of professional responsibility aligned with the strategic significance of the facility.
